David Cairns

David Cairns - Chair of Governors

I am Agrochemical Director at Simpsons Malt based in Berwick-upon-Tweed; responsible for supplying advice and products to arable farmers in the trading area for all crop inputs, and procuring malting barley for the company.

I am passionate about all children being able to achieve and reach their academic potential.  For this reason, I have been a governor involved in all stages of education in Berwick-upon-Tweed, hoping to both support and challenge our community schools in their provision of an outstanding education for all children from ages 4 - 19.



 Sarah Swales Governor

Sarah Swales - Community Governor

I bacame a Community Governor in September 2014 and also act as the link Governor for GATE (Gifted, Able, Talented and Enthusiastic) pupils, Child Protection (including SEN and LAC).  I am also on the Finance Committee.

I studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the 1990s and since graduating have worked in the private sector, NHS and Prison Services.  I run a dental practice in Berwick upon Tweed, where I act as a mentor and also support dental nursing students, mainly through the apprenticeship scheme.

I believe that every child should be educated in an environment in which learning is enjoyable.  By creating this, students will be able to achieve their potential, develop their skills, confidence and attitudes to succeed in the future.

Professor Richard Freeman - Community Governor

I am a Professor in the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh, where I hold school-wide responsibilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning.  I have lived in Berwick since 2010 and I am a community governor.

Dr Susan Farrington - Partnership Governor

I became a Community Governor for Berwick Middle School over 6 years ago, where I am Vice-Chair of the Standards Committee and have been involved in Core subject liaison roles and also monitoring transition into Middle School and on to the next school.  I took on the role of Link Governor to Berwick Academy about 2.5 years ago so I am a Partnership Governor on this Governing Body.

I studied Biochemistry and Applied Molecular Biology at the University of Manchester and then went on to do a PhD at the University of Liverpool.  Since obtaining my Doctorate, I have working in Edinburgh performing Cancer Research and am employed by the University of Edinburgh as a Principle Research Scientist, with additional roles supporting students and staff as Advisor/Lecturer and Mentor.  I am also a STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math's and Medicine) Ambassador for both Northumberland and South Scotland. 


Mr John Gilchrist - Partnership Governor

I am the partnership governor representing Tweedmouth Community Middle School, where I am the Chair of Governors.  I joined the Berwick Academy Board of Governors in 2017, where I also sit on the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

I joined Tweedmouth Community Middle School as a parent governor to contribute to the education provision that my three children and all other children in the area will experience.

I work with Audit Scotland where I qualified as a chartered public finance accountant.  I commute daily to Edinburgh where I oversee audit quality appraisal for all public sector auditors in Scotland.


Mrs Karen Bagley - Support Staff Governor

I am the Support Staff Governor and hold the position of Finance Officer at Berwick Academy.


Mr Andrew Dickson - Teaching Staff Governor

I am now in my twelfth year of teaching, and my sixth here at Berwick Academy.  As a student, I only ever had one career in mind, and that was teaching.  I am deeply passionate and committed to ensuring every young adult I work with, achieves their full potential.  I am a local resident of Berwick, and since relocating here, I have also developed a deep appreciation of Berwick upon Tweed as a town and community.

Outside of work, I am a committed cyclist competing in a wide array of local events.
