Book Donations for Berwick Academy
Brilliant Book Donations for Berwick Academy Library Campaign
The Student Librarians of Berwick Academy have been delighted to receive book donations from a number of sources this term, including a teacher from another school, a neighbour in the community and Royal Grammar School Newcastle. As the photos illustrate, people have been incredibly generous in their donations. These books add to stock that had already been donated from publishers and authors last term, with the help of locally-based author and illustrator, Helen Stephens, and young adult author Vivian French.
The team of student librarians is working to rebuild a library for Berwick Academy with the help of teachers and site staff. The library space, a large classroom in the English block, has recently been refurbished with fresh paint, bright furniture and lots of book shelves. The librarians have been working hard to categorise the books by genre. This has been the cause of much interesting debate about how best to group the books to appeal to our students, and will no doubt be a work in progress as the library grows.
The next step for the team will be the big job of cataloging and labelling all the stock. We aim to have the library open as a study space and reading room next half term, and as a borrowing library before the end of the school year.
We are delighted to be putting reading back at the heart of Berwick Academy. If you have books that you would like to donate, please bring them in to reception. If you are unsure whether or not your books would be suitable for a school library, please contact the school and ask to speak to Lorna Wellingsclare, Assistant Head Teacher.
