Berwick Academy

Science

Our central belief is that Science is a subject for everyone.    We are passionate about our local context and the wonderful opportunities it affords us, and are building links to companies, organisations and locations that support teaching Science. We have a close partnership with the Science teachers at the middle schools in our partnership, and work together to ensure that our students experience a seamless transition in terms of curriculum when they join us in Year 9.

As well as working to develop scientific literacy and reading skills, we use practical and investigative work to engage students. Flames and explosions can make our lessons go with a bang, helping to ignite curiosity and excitement, as well as enjoyment! By invoking a sense of awe and wonder about the world, we are looking to encourage curiosity and support life-long learning, for example how our cells and bodies work and how drugs affect this.

Our highly ambitious curriculum facilitates our students to acquire foundational building blocks of knowledge that enable them to make progress when meeting new ideas and concepts in this subject. We equip students with the tools to think critically and to evaluate information with regard to decisions that they will make as future citizens about health, energy, climate and environment. We use the whole-school Read, Think, Write strategy to support this work.

Through the Berwick Way and our values of friendship, learning and respect, we work to ensure that students develop good habits with respect to the well-being of themselves and others, for example in diet, vaccination and contraception.  We regularly include information about STEM careers and courses to prepare our students to make decisions about their future. In this way we are enhancing and adding to the science capital of all our pupils to ensure they maximise their potential following their studies with us.
